1. The soldiers that entered ther Johansens apartment were fiercer than The Giraffe. These soldiers were older and more trained than the ones on the street. For example, the one on the street goofed off and werwe kinder, although the soldiers in the aparment did not lower their tone when Mama and Papa asked them to.

2. He did this because if the germans tapped the line, they would have knowledge of Ellen. One code, how's the weather for fishing, probally meant, could you take a Jew? because they are both questions. Another code, Inge will bring a carton of cigarettes, means Inge will bring a Jew, and then Papa says only one, which means only one Jew.

3. The scene involved Kirsti possibly blowing the cover of Ellen. Lois Lowery had suspense building, and throughout the book we knew Kirsti was ignorant and couldn't keep a secret and said everything she thought.

1. The three uniformed German soldiers were different from the first two because they were much older then the other two soldiers. They were also much more meaner.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code because during the war, the Nazi's took over the phone lines and could here everything that anybody said. So if Papa said that he was taking Ellen Rosen to Uncle Henrix, the Germans would know where Ellen was going to go.

3. When the train doors open, two Nazi soldiers walked in and walked over to Annemarie and Ellen. Because Kirsti is a little kid, she was just about to give a hint that Ellen was a Jew. But Mama stopped her just in time.

OB #1 (kanobie)

The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night were different from the two soldiers on the street in Chapter 1 because they where more serious and older. In chapter 1 the soldiers are more care free, and talk about how pretty Kristi is and such, and in chapter 5 it says "these three uniformed men were different from the ones on the street corners. The street soldiers were often young, some times ill at ease... But these men where older and their faces were set with anger." which means that they were not a firm as these men.

2) Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik on the phone in code because if the Germans had tapped phone lines and if Papa had said can we bring a Jew to your house? Then they might get suspicions about the family and hunt them down, so they talk in code, as in Jews being a pack of cigarettes so that German would think it was simply a gift. Another thing is, "Is the weather good for fishing?" is like saying "Can we bring a Jew to hide?"

3) The author created suspense by making you think Kristi was going to blab about how its Ellen's year when the guard asked them about the new year. So now your 100% sure she’s going to tell, but then she doesn’t, and you just let out a sigh of relief.

1. These soldiers were much different than the one's on the street corner. These Nazi's were very, very strict while the other soldiers complemented Kirsti and broke their harsh stance. The Nazi's that came to the Johansen's house were also more older and experienced than the ones on the street corner. Annemarie also states this with internal dialogue on page 46.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code because he knew the phone lines could be tapped. He used phrases like "Is the weather good for fishing today?" to ask if he was ready for Mama, Kirsti, Annemarie and Ellen. Also papa said "I have brought a pack of cigarettes for you" to say he had brought Ellen, and also said "Yes, just one " for she was all alone.

3. The author creates suspense by building up Kirsti's character throughout the book. We know her as a blabbermouth who is not careful about what she says around the soldiers so when she says "Guess what?" we all think (including Annemarie) that Kirsti is going to tell the solider Ellen is a jew. But she only says that they are visiting a relative and she's wearing her new shiny shoes.

1. The soldiers were different because the ones on the street were loose and younger. In the first chapter the soldier gets loose to Kirsti an touches her hair and says she is pretty. The soldiers that came at night were alot tougher. On page 46 it says,"The street soldiers were often young and ill at ease, and Annemarie remembered how Giraffe had, for a moment, let his harsh pose slip and had smiled at Kirsti. But these men were older and their faces were set with anger.
Papa talked to Uncle Hendrik in code words because the Germans controlled they could tap the phone lines and listen to people conversations. If Papa hadn't used code words and just said I am going to send you our Jewish nieghbor the germans could have heard that and get Papa in a lot of trouble. Some code words they used were cigarette cartins and is the weather good for fishing. The first one stands for Ellen and they are not giving Uncle Hendrik cigaretts they are giving him Ellen. The second one I think means are you ready to get Ellen.
3. When they were on the train they were going by pretty senery when the German soldier came and asked them a question that if Kirsti answered would give up Ellen. The author creates suspence by having Annemarie think of what Kirsti would say and then having Kirsti blurt out a few words and then have Mama stop her. This creates suspense because the readers think that Kisti might blurt it out and change the plot of the book and get Ellen in danger.

1.) The German soldiers are different from the two that were on the corner because the two that were on the corner were younger then the Soldiers who game in looking for The Rosen’s and the ones that were looking for Ellen and her parents were fiercer then the ones on the corner.

2.) Papa was speaking in code to Uncle Henrik in case the German's tapped the phone lines. Some of the code words that papa used when speaking to Uncle H were "Is the weather good for fishing= can we come visit, Inge is going to bring you a cartoon of Cigs and more might be coming which is code for were bring a Jew to stay with you when Inge, Annemarie, Kirsti and Annemarie's Jewish friend Ellen come.

3.) The author created suspense in the scene when they Mother and all three girls were on the way to go spend with Uncle H. The suspense is when the German Soldiers come on to the train and ask where the Johansen's are going and they think Kirsti's going to blurt our "This is our friend Ellen and it's HER New Year," which means Ellen would be taken away, but luckily Kirsti didn't say that instead she said " were going to visit our uncle and she showed the soldier her new black shiny shoes.

1. The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night are different from the two on the street because as Annemarie said they where sterner and unlike the soldiers at the corner who for a moment touched Kirsti's hair and kinda let his guard down, the soldiers at their apartment where always stern and mean.
2.The code papa used to speak to Uncle Henrik meant "Annemarie, Kirsti and Mrs. Johansen where going to go to his house and that they where bringing a Jewish person (Ellen) which is what he meant by "and she will be bringing a carton of cigarettes." and by "But there are a lot of cigarettes in Copenhagen if you know where to look." I think he meant that there where a lot of Jews in hiding in Copenhagen.
3.The author describes the scene on the train and adds suspense by instead of going an telling you right away what Kirsti says she goes into he minds of the characters and tells you what they're thinking and you keep wondering "will Kirsti blow it?" Then finally tells you what Kirsti says.

(Ch. 5, 6, & 7: #1)
The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night were different from the two soldiers on the street in chapter one in a very important way. The three uniformed German soldiers were older and appeared to be more dedicated to the Nazi cause than were the two soldiers mentioned in chapter one. The soldiers who visited the Johansen's apartment were ruthless and unsympathetic to Jews and to the Danes in general. For example, in the text, the soldiers tore in half the pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Johansen's daughters in order to intimidate the family. The two younger soldiers in chapter one, however, were not quite as ruthless. Although they, too, were Nazis, they were a bit more sympathetic and kind. For instance, when the two soldiers and young Kristi Johansen passed each other on the sidewalk, one of the soldiers smiled at Kristi and told her that he has a little girl just like she is. These soldiers, at least for that one moment, had let down their guard and acted a bit more "human" than the typical Nazi soldiers were. As you can see, the three uniformed German soldiers who visited the Johansen's apartment were much different from the two younger soldiers mentioned in chapter one.

1. The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night were different from the two soldiers on the street because from text evidence from the men on the streets it shows that obviously they have had less experience and because of that they were but on the streets. Although every solider is important, the streets aren't as major as going into someone's home. On the other hand, the soldiers that came into the house have had many more experiences because in the story it shows that they were very aggressive to find what they were looking for (Jew), and just barged in and also, where very disappointed when they did not find evidence of a Jew. Therefore, it depends on where the soldiers are needed and how long they have been working.

2. In the book when Papa speaks to Uncle Henrik on the phone in code means that they were being careful because who knows the soldiers could be cutting the phone lines and be listing to the conversations. This is important because if they just blurted out the truth and they were listing they could get suspicious and track them down. One example of a code is Papa says he will be delivering to Uncle Henrik one carton of cigarettes and then Uncle Henrik says "Yes, just one.” I think this means when it says just one meaning Ellen because obviously they are bringing their normal children but one extra one and then the entire family+Ellen=extra person. Another example of them using the code is when Papa asks "Is the whether good for fishing" meaning is it okay to bring the crew up. I think this is a good example because if the soldiers were listing they would just suspect fishing. Also, it is kind of true because in the next chapter it does say Uncle Henrik does fish and lives near dock/port. In conclusion, they used the code to try to cover up their secret, and also they had very good ways of changing the truth into a code.

3. The scene on the train with Mrs. Johansen and the girls to me I thought the entire thing was suspenseful. I think the author created that holding onto your seats feeling by first when the soldiers coming on when Kirsti started opening her mouth. From previous evidence it has shown that because Kristi is a little girl she does not know really what not to say and what to say. It made everyone that knew Kristi scared because they thought she was going to mention Ellen being a Jew. When all Kirsti said was her new shoes and visiting her Uncle everyone around me actually breathed and even I took a sigh of relief. In conclusion, throughout that scene the author made you have many questions swirling around in your head and many emotions and suspense. I know the author made me that way.

1. the soldiers where different frum the soldiers on the street because they where older and more stuburn. also they where very suspishish abaut ellen.

2. They where talking in code because the German army acupide the contry so the could be listnig to there conversation. I think the code was that the pack of cigerets was ellen.

3. the author created suspense by trying to make you think that Kirsti was going to tell the soldier that ellen was jewish.

1. The men that went in the apartment were different from the men who were on the street because the men on the street was not as mean to them than the men that came in the apartment he was mad he did not find elen.

2. papa specks to uncle henrik on the phone in code because the notces could have phone tape the line so they can listen to there calls i think the call meant by is it a good time to fish i think it means is this a good time to come they hid the whole conversation.

3. the aurther did create suspence because they said what they tthought she was going to say that this was elen and she is celebrating her new year there it created suspense but she did not say that she said i am going to m uncle's house with my new shiny black shoes.

1. The soldiers that came in the night were different from the ones on the street because they were much more serious and angry looking.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code because the German soldiers may be tapping into the phone lines, so he didn't want them to hear what he was talking about. One of the code words was "...a carton of cigarettes" which I think represents Ellen. Another one of the code words was "Is it a good day for fishing?" which I think means "can we come over?"

3. The scene on the train was Mrs. Johansen and the girls sitting in a booth with Ellen pressing her face against the window. Then the german soldier comes. This is where the author builds suspense. Kirsti opens her mouth to speak, and Annemarie is sure she will blab about Ellen, but instead she boasts about her shoes.

1. The soldiers on the corner were different from the ones to went to the Johansens in the middle of the night because the ones at the apartment were much older and much more hardened and experienced Nazi officials, it says this on page 46. The ones on the corner were much nicer and weren't very focused on their jobs.

2. Papa was speaking to Henrik in code on the phone because during the occupation the Nazis controlled all communications so they probably tapped the phones(eavesdropping)so they talked in codes not to draw suspicion. One of the code words that they used was carton of cigarettes which I believe represents a Jew. I think when he said, Is the weather good for fishing? It could have been the indicator for, Im bringing you a Jew to hide or something along the lines of that.

3. The author created suspense by making it sound like since Kirsti was very young she may blow there cover by saying Ellen was a Jew when the two Nazis asked about them going to visit their uncle. But instead Kirsti said something about her new shoes and the soldiers laughed. Annemarie thought Kirsti might blow their cover because the soldiers were suspicious they might be going to celabrate the Jewish New Year.

2.
Papa speaked in a code on the phone because the soldiers could have tapped the phone lines. Like some of the codes are is the weather good for fishing and the ciggaretes to dissice the kids.
3.
The author created suspence because when the soldiers asked the questions to mama and everyone kirsti almost gave it away by telling and almost got them cought. But luckily the soldier didn't belive her because she is just a little kid who doesn't know much.

1.The three uniformed Germen soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night are different from the two soldiers on the street because the ones on the street where younger then the ones that came to the apartment. One example of thins is on page 46 where annemarie says "These thre uniformed men where differant fom the ones on the street corners. The street corner soildiers where offten young, sometimes ill and at ease. But these men where older and their faces were set with anger.2.Papa spoke like this so if the Germen soildiers had bugged the phone they wouldn't know what he was talking aboout. One of the code words was on page 53 and it was "Is the weather good for fshing?" I think what papa means when he askks Henrik this is is it ok if i bring the Jewish girl today. One other example of the code words is on page 53 and Papa says that he is just bringing one carton of cigerets. I think this is code for yes im just bringing one jewish child.3.The auther created suspence by adding in the scene on the train where the nazi soildiers ask Kristi if she is going to have a good new year. And everyone in the family thought that she would blur out that it was Ellens new year, which would make the soildiers know that Ellen was jewish since it was the Jewish new year that day. If the nazi's found this out Ellen could be illed and so could the rest of nnimery's family.

1. The three uniformed guards are different than the two soldiers because the soldiers on the streets were usually young, and the uniformed men were old. Also, the soldiers were ill at ease, meanwhile, the uniformed soldiers were confident, and forceful. The soldiers were young, so they would slip at times, like on pg. 46,"and Annemarie remembered how the Giraffe, for a moment, let his harsh pose slip and smiled at Kirsti." The uniformed men had anger-stricken faces, that wouldn't change expressions.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrick on the phone in code because he didn't want Anyone to overhere that he was sending a Jew to him, because that's dangerous. I think that "a carton of cigarettes" is really "a Jewish person". I think this because on pg.53, after Papa says, "...and she will be bringing you a carton of cigarettes.", Uncle Henrick probably asked,"Just one?" because Papa answers, "Yes, just one." This probably means Ellen, because she is the "carton of cigarettes" or the Jewish person, and "just one."

3. Annemarie, Kirsti and Ellen are all excited on the train because they see the homes in the small towns and villages by the seaside. They also see Deer Park. The author builds suspense by having German soldiers on the train, asking questions. The most suspenseful part is when everyone thinks Kirsti is going to tell the soldier that Ellen had her New Year, which the guard would then know that Ellen was Jewish.

Anonymous said...

1. The three uniformed Nazis were different from the two on the corner because like papa said in the next chapter he thought they would just enter the room and leave seeing that there were no places to hide anyone, also Annemarie had said with internal dialog how the post guard slips from the hardcore surface to a nice smile and plays with Kirsty's hair when the others never once and also they are much older pointed out by the book and so they can keep this bad status easily.

2. Papa speaks in code to the brother-in-law because if the Nazis had the phone tapped then it could be a hazard to tell him out loud there that he was hiding a Jew and was going to take her over to his house. I think...

Is the weather good for fishing means it is time to come to you.

Carton of cigarettes means Ellen and then there is more coming means Ellen’s parents will come soon.

3. On the train a Nazi soldier came onboard and when he asked them if it was a new year for them when mama said no Kirsty started to be a big mouth and what the author did was skip ahead to what Annemarie thought was going to happen but during this you thought it was happening and so it created suspense because you thought they were goners.

1. The three soldiers were different than the two soldiers because when the three soldiers came they showed know mercy and did not care much for the family. However, the two soldiers were nicer and weren't as aggressive.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code because if the Germans were tapping the phone lines they would find out about their plan of hiding Ellen. One example of the code words was "Carton of Cigarettes" this word represents Ellen. I also think that "Is the weather good for fishing" he's asking is it all clear, or are you ready.

3. One of the German soldiers that was walking through the train asked Mama where she was going. When she replied with her brother's house he asked are you going there for the New Year. She mentioned it was only october. But when Kirsti said "and guess what" to the soldier everyone thought they knew what she was going to say "This is our friend Ellen and its her New year." Luckily she only mentioned her shoes and kept the secret, a secret. The author created suspense in this scene by building up slowly to where she almost gives away the plan to the German soldier.

1) The differences from the soldiers on the corner and the ones from the house are...
One, the soldiers from the corner were young and were not as serious then the ones how came to the house.
Another thing that is different about the soldiers on the corner and the ones who came to the house is when the soldiers came to the house they did not need a reason to rip up the photo or stomp there feet but the ones on the corner stopped the children because they were running down the street and looked like they were up to no good.

2) Papa and Uncle Henrik used code on the phone because the Nazis hacked the phone lines and if they heard you say they were bring Ellen, a Jew they would get caught and be stopped. One of the codes they used was "Is the weather good for fishing" means that we are coming is now a good time? And another one is " There is a lot of cigarettes available in Copenhagen now, if you know where to look." This means that they were going to bring a Jew but they were in hidden everywhere.

3)The scene on the train was at first it was very calm like a normal train ride just talking about the towns and such, but then when the soldiers came the ride turned very tense.

1. The three uniformed guards who came to the house where very different from the two at the street corner because the three where older, more concentrated on the job and much nastier. As Annemarie describes on page 46 the soldiers at the corner are usually at ease and are quite young. Also, the street corner soldiers slipped and the "giraffe" smiled at Kirsti saying how she reminded the soldier of his small daughter. The soldiers how raided the house, though, were older and much more angry, or as Annemarie says" their faces were set in anger". Lastly the house soldiers also were barking at the Johansens, not for a moment slipping into distraction like the "giraffe" soldier had.

2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code as to not stir up any trouble. If Papa had outright said "we are bringing a Jew" etc. then another family in the apartment building may hear them. Also, the German Nazi have occupied and control the country basically, so if Papa and Uncle Henrik didn't talk in code German soldiers may be listening because the soldiers have the power to tap phone lines. One example of a code would be "is the weather good for fishing?" I believe this represents "is it a good time to bring a Jew?". Secondly, I believe that the carton of cigarettes represent Ellen and when Papa explains " yes, just one but there will be more on the way i am sure". I believe this represents how for now only Ellen is with the Johansens, but soon they shall bring more, I personally believe those others will be Ellen's parents later on in the book.

3. I believe the author created suspense during the train ride by using two things... First I believe that mentioning how Annemarie thought that Kirsti was going to say something stupid, I know for sure this had me and the entire class nervous of what action Kirsti would take, of course though in the end Kirsti pulls through. Secondly when the German Nazi soldiers come in I believe it builds extreme suspense and also, after the Germans go when Mama says there are also occupation soldiers here in the country this adds suspense for the next chapter and for Ellen's protection.

1.The three uniformed soldiers who came to the Johansens apartment in the middle of the night were different from the ones on the street not by the way they dressed but how they acted. The soldiers on the street acted more stately and acted more like a real Nazi soldier than a normal person acts. The soldiers on the street broke their Nazi behavior for a moment, touched Kirsts hair, said that she was pretty, and looked like his own daughter. The Nazi soldiers that came to the Johansens door would not have done that they would have kept quiet and stood tall even if they really wanted to touch Kirstis hair and talked to the girls.

2.Papa talked in code language to Uncle Henrik because he didn’t want anyone to hear what he was saying it was a secret. If he just said what he wanted to say someone over heard they might get suspicious. One example of Uncle Henrik and Papa using code language over the phone was when papa said is the weather good for fishing. That meant is it safe to hide a Jew their.

3.On the train, Nazi soldiers were checking each seat and sometimes asked questions. When the soldiers get to Mrs. Johansens and the girls seat the author builds suspense by having Kirsti almost say something that would give away Ellen and that she’s a Jew. When the soldier said are you going to celebrate the New Year Mrs. Johansen said, it’s only November. Then when Kirsti opened her mouth to say something Annemarie thought she would say, “this is our friend Ellen and its her New Year.” Instead, she went on to talk about her shoes and how she was going to her Uncle Henriks house

1. The three uniformed German soldiers who came to Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night were different from the two soldiers on the street in chapter one because they were more kind to everyone and the soldiers in chapter 1 were not kind but not mean. For example, on page 4 it says “The soldier reached down and stroked the little sister’s short, tangled curls.” And on page 47 is says “Suddenly he grabbed a handful of Ellen’s hair.” The difference between the soldiers is that the soldiers in chapter 1 only stroked her hair and the soldiers who came to Johansen’s apartment pulled Ellen’s hair which proves that they are kinder or stricter than each others.
2. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik on the phone in code because if anyone could hear their conversation as Annemarie could, Papa didn’t want anyone to find out what Ellen had in mind for Uncle Hendriks like it says at the end of page 53.
3. In the scene on the train with Mrs. Johansen and the girls the author made suspence by writing how the soldier were asking them all these questions like “where are you going” and questions like that. That makes it suspencful because they were getting nervise of weather the soldiers were getting suspicious or thinking of stopping them as it says in page
56.

1. The German soldiers on the corner where younger, nicer and more calm but still had anger in their faces. The soldiers that came into the apartment were angry and used sharp words that scared Annemarie.

2. Papa spoke on the phone in code just in case soldiers were listening to the conversation.
"Is the weather good for fishing" means can the girls come safely?
"A carton of cigarettes" is code for a Jew.

3. The girls were enjoying the scenes outside of the windows when two German soldiers got on the train and began asking questions. Mama and Annemarie were scared of what she might say when Kirsti talked too much.
